I was being encouraged to always get more exercise. It was the only thing that would get the liquid off, but no shoe or slipper existed that would fit my enormous feet. But you had to wear shoes or slippers because of the ''No Trip'' policy on the ward, which made sense, but meant that as I trudged around the ward, slowly, each and every member of staff that passed would say, ''Put something on those feet''.

The main hazard as I could see it, was the small conical plastic caps that are used to make the thermometers hygenic. They had a tendency to pop off, and being made of transparent plastic, sort of invisible and sort of like mini-traps, waiting to be enough to make me fall over. They were everywhere if you looked.

During my stay I made three pairs of slippers. The first were made of material with ballet-like ribbons made from stolen bandages which were soft enough not to hurt my sensitive feet. The second were a customisation of massive specialist slippers with a strap made from a stolen tourniquet. The last slippers, the most robust of the three, were made from cardboard urine bottles sliced in half lengthways with foil medical trays for soles. They were covered in black socks stretched over the structure, and from a distance looked half respectable, but also from a distance sounded like I was clambering over a tin roof in metal shoes.
